If you’re searching for a newborn photographer in Romsey or the Macedon Ranges, you’re probably in the middle of the most extraordinary season of your life. A new baby is coming — or she’s already here, small and perfect and changing faster than you ever expected. You want this documented properly. Not on a phone. Not by a well-meaning relative who borrowed a camera once. On your walls. Forever. This guide walks you through everything — from when to book, to what happens on the day, to what the finished artwork looks like in your home.

A newborn session is not just a photography appointment. It’s an experience. And the right photographer changes everything about how you feel walking in, how your baby settles, and how you feel walking out.
As a newborn photographer in Romsey, I’ve built a studio and a process around one single thing: making every mum feel completely taken care of. Before the camera comes out. Before she’s even arrived.
Aurora Joy Photography is a luxury studio in Romsey, Victoria, serving the Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, and regional Victoria. Every session ends with finished wall artwork — framed prints, heirloom albums, canvas pieces designed for your home. Not a USB. Not a digital download. Artwork. On your walls. In thirty years.
This is the most important thing I can tell you — and it’s simpler than you think.
Book before your baby arrives.
The ideal window for newborn photography is the first 5 to 14 days of life. During this time, newborns are naturally sleepy, flexible, and easily settled into those beautiful curled poses you see in photographs. After 14 days, that soft newborn stage begins to shift — and those classic poses become much harder to achieve.
I hear it often. A mum reaches out when her baby is three weeks old, four weeks old. She wishes she’d known to book earlier. The photographs are always beautiful — but the window for certain poses has quietly closed.
Book during your second or third trimester. Lock in your date. Then let the rest of the pregnancy unfold.

Before you arrive, the studio is heated to 28 degrees. Your baby is warm from the moment she walks through the door. We have everything you’ll need — wraps, props, sets, and posing aids — all chosen for warmth, beauty, and timelessness. You don’t need to bring much. Just your baby, your partner if you’d like family photographs, and any older siblings joining you.
Newborn sessions at Aurora Joy Photography run three to four hours — sometimes longer. We do not watch the clock.
We follow your baby’s lead. Always. If she needs a feed, we stop. If he needs a settle, we wrap him and we wait. The session doesn’t end until we have what we came for.
The most beautiful newborn photographs don’t come from perfect poses. They come from the space between — the quiet moments, the stillness, the realness. That’s what we’re here for.
This session is as much about you as it is about your baby.
Hair and makeup is available as an add-on, and most clients choose it. Not because they need to look a certain way — but because being taken care of on session day is part of the experience. You have been taking care of everyone else. This is yours.
The session is just the beginning.
A few weeks after your newborn session, you’ll return to the studio for your artwork viewing. The room is warm. Your photographs are on the screen. For most mums, the tears come before they even realise — because seeing yourself really seeing yourself in those photographs is something no one quite prepares for.
At Aurora Joy Photography, every session ends with finished artwork. Framed prints. Heirloom albums. Canvas pieces made for your home. We guide you through every size, style, and placement decision. You are never left to figure it out alone.

Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs — on your baby and your family. You’ll receive a detailed pre-session guide when you book, covering outfits, feeding schedules, and everything else you need to know.
Absolutely — and sibling photographs are some of the most treasured we create. We recommend allowing additional time within your session for sibling and family portraits. Ask us about this when you enquire.
This is the most common worry — and it almost never plays out the way you fear. We are experienced at settling newborns. We feed, we wrap, we wait. We’ve seen everything, and we know how to work with it.
As early as possible — ideally during your second trimester. Newborn sessions book months in advance, particularly for the winter and spring periods. Don’t leave it too late.
If you’re pregnant — or if you’ve just welcomed your baby — don’t let this season pass without marking it. This moment will not come again. And the photographs will put you right back here, every time you walk past them, for the rest of your life.
As a newborn photographer in Romsey and across the Macedon Ranges, it would be an honour to create something for your walls that you’ll carry for a lifetime.
The good stuff — session inspiration, real client stories, and the occasional note from Emm. Straight to your inbox. No spam. Ever.
