How to Pick the Right Cot for Your Newborn. It seems like such a silly question right now but trust me, it makes a hell of a difference.
Bringing your little bundle of joy home is an exciting milestone, and one of the essential items you’ll need is a cozy cot for your newborn. But with so many options available, how do you pick the right one? We’ve got you covered with our guide to choosing the perfect cot that ticks all the boxes: price, quality, aesthetic, and practicality.
First things first, let’s talk price. We understand that budget is a consideration for many parents. Look for cots that offer a good balance between affordability and quality. Check out Australian baby stores like Baby Bunting and Target for a wide range of options to suit different budgets. Also, don’t forget you can pop your cot on layby or set up a gift registry. This means your friends and fam can put towards it instead of another loud annoying baby you at your shower.
Quality is crucial when it comes to your baby’s safety and comfort. Ensure the cot meets Australian safety standards and has sturdy construction. Look for features like adjustable mattress heights, teething rails, and drop-down sides for easy access. The cot we bought for Aurora came apart and put back together about 5 times between her and Kody. It didn’t lose its shape or anything until the last re-build. Where Josh lost all the bolts and he had to stud nail it together. Luckily that was only for about 2 months.
Aesthetics matter too! Your nursery should be a reflection of your personal style. Whether you prefer a sleek modern design or a timeless/classic look, there’s a cot out there to match your taste. Consider materials like solid timber or choose a convertible cot that grows with your child. You and your baby will be spending a lot of time in here. Creating a beautiful and calming environment that you actually like will help in those early hours of the morning.
Lastly, practicality is key. Opt for cots with ample storage underneath or those that can be easily converted into a toddler bed. Adjustable mattress heights are a great feature as they allow you to raise the mattress for easy access when your baby is little and lower it as they grow. As much as we love the look of the hanging cots or ultra modern cots. Are they practical when its been 5 days and you’re running on 10 hours sleep in those 5 days… I say nope.
Remember, it’s always a good idea to visit baby stores and see the cots in person. Test the sturdiness, check the finishes, and visualize how it would fit into your nursery. Take your time and make an informed decision.
