One year. Already. If you’re looking for a cake smash photographer in Romsey or the Macedon Ranges, chances are you’ve spent the past twelve months figuring it all out, the feeds, the sleep, the love that is bigger than anything you prepared for. Your baby is turning one. And that deserves more than a phone photograph. This guide covers what to expect at your cake smash session at Aurora Joy Photography, from what’s included, to how the day works, to what the finished artwork looks like in your home.

A cake smash session is a first birthday photography session, styled, warm, and designed entirely around your baby’s personality.
It involves a beautifully designed set, a custom cake made just for the session, and a whole lot of genuine joy. The photography captures your baby’s very first encounter with cake, and the reactions are always extraordinary.
Some babies demolish it immediately, some approach it cautiously, with one tentative finger. While others look at it with complete confusion and refuse to touch it at all. Every single response makes for extraordinary photographs.

As a cake smash photographer in Romsey, every cake smash session at Aurora Joy Photography includes a fully guided experience from start to finish; The cake, the outfit, the cute mini clawfoot bathtub, the themed backdrop as well as a portrait session before we get into the messy part. Here’s what that looks like:

Every session ends with finished artwork. Not just a USB of digital files. Wall art, designed for your home, that will be on your baby’s wall for the next eighteen years.
Before You Arrive
Before your session, we’ll chat through your vision for the set, colours, themes, the vibe you’re going for. You don’t need to come with a plan. We can guide you through the whole thing. We’ll also send you a pre-session guide covering everything from what to dress your baby in, to feeding timing, to what you might like to wear if you’d like to be included in some photographs.
During the Session
The studio is warm. The set is ready. And your baby walks in and has absolutely no idea what’s about to happen.
We always start with some calm, styled photographs before introducing the cake. This gives us beautiful images before the chaos begins, and it gives your baby time to settle into the space.
Then the cake arrives. And then, whatever happens, happens. That’s the whole point.
We follow your baby’s lead at every stage. There is no forcing. There is no clock watching. The session unfolds exactly as your baby needs it to.
Either straight after your session or a few days later, you’ll return to Aurora Joy Photography for your gallery viewing. You’ll see the photographs for the first time. Most parents, at least one of them, cries.
From there, we guide you through every artwork decision. Size. Style. Finish. Placement. You walk away knowing exactly what’s going on your walls and when.

Yes. But it is totally up to you!
I know that’s not what most mums expect to hear. A cake smash session is about the baby, but you are also a part of this story. You are the reason she’s here. You’re the one who has shown up every single day for the past twelve months.
Some of the most moving photographs from a cake smash session are the ones of a parent holding their baby after the cake is demolished. Covered in icing. Laughing. Present.
You deserve to be in the frame. Let us put you there.
When should I book?
As early as possible. Sessions book out months in advance, particularly around the popular birthday periods. Don’t wait until the week before, reach out when you know what theme / colour scheme you have in mind, and we will schedule it for around 10 months old- when your little one is sitting unassisted but not quite running around just yet. This ensures your finish art work will be back in time for their birthday.
What theme or colours should I choose?
Whatever feels right for them. Pastels, bold colours, florals, minimal white, we can style a set around almost anything. We’ll chat through your vision when you book, and we can also guide you if you’re not sure where to start.
What should they wear?
For the styled photographs before the cake, something beautiful and on-theme – if you aren’t sure we have so many beautiful pieces in the studio for you to select from. For the cake smash itself, we will supply a dedicated smash outfit. We cover this in detail in your pre-session guide.
Do you make the cake?
We source the custom smash cake for your session from a registered Baker. You don’t need to organise that separately. This also includes any allergy safe cakes that are needed.
What if we don’t want our baby eating cake?
That is perfectly fine. We have captured pancake, fruit, spaghetti and even steak smash sessions to celebrate first birthday’s. The options are truly endless.
