Congratulations! Say goodbye to your nights at the pub with your mates and lazy Saturdays on the golf course coz things are gonna change. Hahah, ok ok calm down. I’m kidding.
Well, kind of. Seriously … golf? It goes for like 6 hours. You might wanna consider taking up a new hobby like … cleaning … or steaming vegetables. For the short term at least.
What IS true is that life as you knew it IS about to change. But for all the best reasons, I assure you. Yes, it’s a challenging time and there’s a lot to learn, but the happiness that is coming your way is next level and I’m seriously excited for you.
How are you feeling? Nervous? Confused? A little lost?
It’s ok to be freaking out about becoming a dad and you most definitely are not alone.
A dad is a seriously important job. There is so much research and evidence now about the crucial role you guys play in children’s social and emotional development. A figure of security. As a teacher. A role model. Every father has their strengths, needs and concerns and you’ve got to do what works for you and your family, that’s for sure.
If you’re worried about how you’ll do or want some advice, Beyond Blue have a fantastic series of videos from guys who are “nailing this whole dad thing” and a whole section of their website called “Dadvice”. You can find it here – > https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/pregnancy-and-new-parents/dadvice-for-new-dads
There’s also a Dad Stress Test which might help if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed at times. We talk a lot about the mental health of new Mums but guys, it can happen to you to so check in with yourself regularly and seek help if you are not feeling ok.
Into Podcasts? Give DadPod a go! It’s presented by Osher Gunsberg (will you accept this rose?) and Charlie Clausen (you know .. the McLeod’s daughters guy) and it’s awesome! Topics like “Laser Thermometors and High Chair Hacks” through to “Flying with babies and leaving bub with a sitter for the first time.” It’s funny, down to earth and pretty handy. I love that it’s Aussie content too so get on it.
Hey Dad, you’re important. We love you … and we need you! So don’t panic. Read up a little, listen to some podcasts, chat to your partner and arm yourself with some tools before baby arrives. Most of all, relax. It’s going to be fine and you’re going to do great!
