Of all the questions I get asked before a session, the most common one is always this: ‘What should we wear?’ And I understand why. What to wear to a family photography session feels like a high-stakes decision when you want the photographs to look as good as you imagine them.

Start with One Person (Usually Mum)

The easiest way to plan your family’s outfits is to start with the person who is hardest to dress. For most families, that’s mum. Find something that makes you feel beautiful. Something you’d genuinely wear. And build outward from there.

When you’re thinking about what to wear to your family photography session, lead with the outfit you love most. Everything else coordinates around it.

Choose a Palette of 3–4 Tones

You’re not trying to match. You’re trying to harmonise.
